Manchester Central Convention Complex or commonly known as Manchester Central is Manchester’s second largest venue centre.
The complex was formally the Manchester Central railway which was in active use from 1880 to 1969 a total of 89 years and was a central hub for connecting the Northern Powerhouse of Manchester to London.
The Centre has the atypical Mancunian red-brick stone exterior, synonymous with many of the cities famous landmarks. The arched roof of the centre designed by Sir John Fowler has a 64 metre span, the second largest railway roof span in the UK and was granted grade II listed building status back in 1963.
With the closure of the Railway station began a bright future for the exhibition industry, when in 1982 after years of disrepair and abandonment the station became G-MEX Centre, and is the still the term used for the centre by some veterans within the exhibition industry. G-Mex or the ‘Greater Manchester Exhibition Centre’ became Manchester’s primary music and concert hall, paying host to some household names such as U2 and Oasis.
With the construction of the Manchester arena, the decision was made to transform G-MEX from primarily a concert venue to a working Exhibition hall, catering for a whole range of industries, trade shows and events. In 2006 Manchester Central as it was now known became a serious contender as one of the North’s most beloved Exhibition centre’s
